Its 6’o clock in morning, I am offered with cup of milk,
with this I start mumbling the very old musical advertisement that used to come
on doordarshan, India’s only channel that time.
The song
“Doodh doodh: piyo
glass full doodh
Chaaro aaur mach gaya
shor gimme more
Doodh doodh wonderful
doodh”
The operation flood advertisement in the 90’s run on
Doordarshan used to be one of my favorite. As I realize on Indians developing
sector AMUL Milk (Anand Milk Union Limited), I see Dr Vergese Kurien, Magsaysay
award winner would definitely be one of the most inspirational figures since
Independence. A large chunk of India’s
livestock owning farmers has seen prosperity because of operation flood.
Kurien should not be judged all alone by his contribution to
the co-operative milk sector alone. He’s ranked amongst the India’s greatest
institution builders. The Indian
Institute of rural development, AMUL Anand, was set up by him on December 1,
1946. Kurien has taught society as well as institutions builders to fight red
tape in bureaucracy and didn’t allow his model to succumb to the pressure of
these babus. According to him, the IAS officers are
basically Aaye-Ram-Gaya-Ram category.
Not being rooted in a mega –city or the national capital is one of the reasons
for its success. It is the program that has grown out of ground.
The critique is that, the program did not venture into areas
where people were dependent, on huge livestock as in Kutch district. Does that
take away from the overall success of the program? No.
Kurien has faced criticism because of Angularities, due to
this, for quite a long time, his evening indulgence was double-gin with tonic.
The Indian Milk co-operative model has travelled to our neighboring
countries, it is because of him and no one can take his place in history.
